#NewZealand cows trapped

Here's one of the most amazing images I've seen so far after our latest devastating Earthquake: IMG_20161114_223140[1].jpg Even though there's many other amazing scenes, I first thought someone must have photoshopped this as a joke .... but then I saw the video... Re: A Model of Saturn’s Rings

I'm afraid I'm far too too busy with other things at the moment so I have no time for any Celestia activities, but here's a texture as requested.

Re: A Model of Saturn’s Rings

Sure, I just exctracted the RGB channels from my RGBA texture, here we go: reflectivity-blend.png As I said, until now my textures are based on Bj?rn Johnsson's data. First I fit the brightness of the rings http://bjj.mmedia.is/data/s_rings/backscattered.png to my transparency http://bjj.mmedia.is/...

Re: A Model of Saturn’s Rings

You are right, the brightness has a value of ~8% where B casts it shadow on Saturn. But I must say, you "cheated" a bit there, becauce you used ambient light. After removing it in Gimp, it was basically black. I'm sorry, I don't know what you mean by this? What do you mean "I used am...

Re: A Model of Saturn’s Rings

Depends on what photos you take as reference. As I stated, it is hard to find a "true" opacity and I was trying my best to match it with photographs. My comparison a few posts ago may prove this, but yes, on more oblique views the rings are too transparent. Personally, I think in your Cel...

Re: A Model of Saturn’s Rings

I would say that overall it is still much too transparent (especially the B-ring). Reading between the lines of the procedure you described in the OP: I started with the transparency map, multiplied it with itself and inverted it to simulate a higher opacity due to a low angle with respect to the ri...

Re: Convert UTC time into Local Time

I wouldn't hold my breath if using the "Contact us" link at the Motherlode. Last time I contacted them I never got a reply, so I'm not sure if anyone is home. ( Who is running that site these days anyway ... Bob? )

Re: Celestia 1.7.0 Development will begin soon

Regardless of who is involved in ongoing development I would suggest that the first priority should be: a 64bit version with no functional changes. This can then serve as the base for ongoing development. I personally don't see any value in adding new features to the 32bit version as that would dist...

Re: A Model of Saturn’s Rings

I wouldn't call myself a perfectionist... but you got the point  Yes I fear the data is just not accurate enough and I am trying to get an accuracy higher than possible. Nothing wrong with being a perfectionist, but pragmatism may be a more useful attribute when dealing with imperfect data...

Re: A Model of Saturn’s Rings

Yes I am well aware of that. I blew up the textures to 512 pixel so they are easily visible for processing. I thought that was probably the case... just checking. :) -- I also display them larger during processing. The outer edge of 140385 is 5km short, and Daphnis is still on the inner edge of its...

Re: A Model of Saturn’s Rings

I meant to ask yesterday why is your texture 512px high? You are aware that Ring Textures only require minimal height? - (2 pixels is plenty and reduces the filesize to 10-20K). Incidentally, I tried your saturn-rings-blend in my setup (no Spice Orbits) with 74510, 140385 and with no adjustments to ...

Re: A Model of Saturn’s Rings

I'm assuming that you checked that the inner and outer limits of the alpha data matches exactly with the inner and outer limits of the RGB data.
This is important to ensure that transparency and RGB values are combined at matching radius.

Re: A Model of Saturn’s Rings

Note that I use these parameters for the rings: Rings { Inner 74510 Outer 140385 Texture "saturn-rings-blend.png" } And for Daphnis a semi-major axis of 136505.5 km to fit the texture. A strange phenomenon for Pan and Daphnis i noticed: Their orbital radii are given much smaller values on...

FWIW,

I re-discovered my original images from that thread : http://celestiaproject.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=17315&p=133565&hilit=SATURN+RINGS#p133565, so I have rehabilitated it by restoring the images.

Re: Parallax uncertainty presentation

Janus, I don't know if you are aware of the "fading orbits" feature which was implemented (but never released) for Celestia 1.7.0. It seems to me that his approach perhaps might be adapted for what you want to acheive (ie. a line centered on the star and fading out relative to the distance...

how to define a proper BodyFrame to let a tidally locked satellite always face it's planet with its x-axis? eg. BodyFrame { TwoVector { Center "Sol/Earth/YourSatellite " Primary { Axis "x" RelativePosition { Target "Sol/Earth"} } Secondary { Axis "y" Relative...
